STS-SINGLETRAIL SCALE
To classify trails more precisely, the six levels of difficulty (S-grades) from S0 to S5 are used.
Easy includes grades S0 and S1, Intermediate is S2, and Difficult includes all grades above S2.
S0 no technical difficulties. Flowing forest and meadow paths on solid ground or gravel. No obstacles like roots or rocks. Gentle gradient, wide curves.
S1- small obstacles such as roots or stones, erosion damage possible. Basic MTB skills and constant attention required.d hier Voraussetzung.
S2- larger roots and stones, unstable ground, steps, narrow turns, gradients up to 70%. Advanced skills needed.
S3 – very technical: rock gardens, big roots, steep ramps, hairpins, and loose surfaces. Requires excellent bike handling.
S4-extremely steep and blocked with boulders, tough root sections, loose scree. Often requires carrying the bike. For experts only.
S5- the ultimate challenge. Minimal braking distance, extreme gradients, scree fields, multiple high steps, fallen trees. Even carrying the bike is difficult and dangerous.
BIKES
All-Mountain – versatile bikes for everything from flatland tours to alpine crossings. Comfort and reliability are more important than weight.
Cross Country (XC) – built for racing, with minimal suspension travel and low weight. Rider position is similar to road cycling.
Enduro – usually full-suspension with adjustable travel, wide tires, and modern geometry. More upright position, built for descents but still tour-friendly.
Downhill – designed for racing on steep terrain. Full suspension, heavy-duty frames, low center of gravity, and up to 18 kg for stability.
